HMTA Scholarships Overview

Who Can Apply?

  • Applicants must be current or former students of HMTA teachers.

  • If a student is not currently studying but has financial need (e.g., for an instrument), a teacher can propose a special case for review.

  • Teachers must submit the student’s name for HMTA records, even if an official application wasn’t submitted.


Scholarship Options

1. HMTA Teacher Memorial Scholarship

  • For K–12 students or college students in any music-related field.
  • Can be used for music camps, lessons, instrument needs, or other approved music expenses.
  • Music camp is defined as any organized music camp for youth through grade 12, the purpose of which is to provice musical education, whether in or out of Helena. 
  • Main scholarship fund for most student applications.



2. Margie Fowler Scholarship

  • For college students majoring or minoring in:

    • Music Education

    • Piano

    • Vocal Performance

    • Pedagogy

  • Award: Up to $1,000 per student.

  • Requires two letters of recommendation:

    • One from a college music professor

    • One from a former HMTA teacher


How Are Awards Decided?

  • Students submit a video performance recording as part of their application.

  • Out-of-town adjudicators score the performances.

  • The HMTA Scholarship Committee reviews performance scores and the written application to decide final awards.


 Additional Details

  • Music Camp Scholarships are limited to the cost of camp tuition.

  • Funds are paid directly to the provider (e.g., college, teacher, music camp).

  • Award announcements are made by early May each year.

  • Fundraising proceeds are split evenly between the two scholarship funds unless donors request otherwise.
