Andrea Malcomson

Andrea Malcomson grew up in Richmond, VA where she studied piano with a graduate of Julliard School of Music. From there, she earned a B.M. in Music Education from Covenant College in Lookout Mtn., GA. She also did additional graduate work in music education at Belmont University and Colorado State University. She has taught piano lessons for 22 years and also taught music in the public schools for seven years.

With a background of teaching in a group setting, Andrea recognizes the necessity for interaction between students especially when studying a primarily solo instrument. She holds two recitals each year and encourages students to play duets. She also hosts piano parties where students perform for one another and interact through theory and ear training games—a fun format for reviewing the essentials.

One of Andrea's goals for her students is for them to enjoy the process of learning music. She encourages her students to practice with purpose and looks for progress made each week between lessons. She requires students to learn music theory and piano technique. The students have another venue for reviewing theory and ear training by completing lessons on the computer lab after each lesson. Students are encouraged to learn classical repertoire as well as music of a lighter caliber.
